Pigs in Mud

I know you’ve all been hanging out for cute piggy pics, so here they are. I am in the process of writing a longer pig post, but it’s not quite coming together, so consider this a little something to keep you going.

Here they are; Fig and Nell, who made the most of a wet summer by lying in muddy patches as often as possible. Photos by Stephen.

Pigs in mud

A mud bath. Much more fun than a regular bath…

Muddy pig

and so very good for the complexion.

Since I don’t have much to say just now, I thought we could finish with a song. This was one our Grandma used to like to sing on muddy occasions (growing up in England one encounters plenty of muddy occasions). I’ll start and you join in. If you’re not sure of the tune you can listen here; the first chorus is at 37s. Off we go!

Mud, mud, glorious mud.
There’s nothing quite like it for cooling the blood,
So follow me, follow,
Down to the hollow,
And there let us wallow,
in Glorious Mud.

From The Hippopotomus Song by Flanders and Swann, 1957.

  1. Flanders and Swan do a real good job on this, I think they wrote it.
There a 4 verse’s. I think, its quite funny, I may have it on disk somewhere. I will look.
Good you are getting up to speed, see you at D’s play.

    • There is a 1959 recording of them performing the Hippo Song live over here. Seems they were quite the comic duo in their banter as well as in song.

  2. Excellent start to the pig sub series! I’m thinking of installing a webcam in their paddock. Instant internet superstars and we can sell advertising on the site.

  3. I love it and am agitating for our Songsters to get into it – the song not the actual mud😄 Your piggy wigs are gorgeous and look totally spoiled. I’d like to change places with them for a week.
And what are you doing with all your FRIIT figs- besides giving them to the cute FignElla? Can recommend simmering in balsamic vinegar and brown sugar🤗

    • I’m trying to keep up with eating the figs as they ripen, sharing with the chickens who are making great leaps into the air to peck at them. Like the vinegar and brown sugar idea though. If the Songsters make a video of the song we could add it to the You Tube channel.

  4. Good fun! We need something g to work on after St Pats night. Just been to see Finding your Feet a film showing olds doing mashups (dancing) in Rome. Ha ha 😍

  5. I haven’t been doing any leaping in the air yet. Am I eating the figs incorrectly?

    • I think you just need to eat more figs. I think you’ll find that the more you eat the more likely you’ll be to have the occasional release of ‘hot air’ which will be bound to assist with lift off. 😜

  6. Lovely!!!!
My Nana used to sing me that song
Used to play a funny old record with that song and some others
I’m forever blowing bubbles comes to mind ❤️❤️

    • Ah yes, I remember the bubble one too. Did your Nana also recite the rhyme ‘Good night, sweet repose, sleep on your back and not on your nose’. That’s another Grandma one now passed to our kids via darling Antigene.

  7. I also know the mud one and the bubble one thanks to Mum. Do you know “Knees up, Mother Brown”? Knees up – as in dancing!

    • Ha, I do know that one! Your mum clearly has a wealth of funny song knowledge. What other ones does she have up her sleeve? Oh, how about ‘Do your ears hang low’?
