Still Swimming

Air temperature 19 degrees. Water temperature 13 degrees.

Deborah and swimming pool

Deborah lounges poolside pre-swim.

After a couple of hours painting the roof Deborah and I decided we were warm enough for a swim. On reflection this may have been delusional thinking induced by paint fumes and altitude.

Pool thermometer

Yup, that water is 13 degrees.

And there she goes. Best keep moving Deborah so as not to ice up.

I swam too, very briefly. The water was so cold that it hurt, and after two lengths I swear hypothermia had started to set in.

So, I wonder, can Deborah and I keep swimming right through winter? Plans for a rudimentary solar pool-water heating system are working their way to the top of our wish list. Any bright ideas?

  1. Ooh I am so impressed! Swimming in May @ 13 degrees! Well done you hardy ladies.
Solar sounds good but ET says “big pool – needs a massive array and pump”.

    • We are taking after my Auntie Jean! Good news is that the pool already has a pump, but by ‘array’ I’m guessing UnklEd means something rather more expensive than a few meters of black alkathene pipe? 🙃

  2. Huh, glad that was captured for posterity but now I’m feeling the pressure…

    • Yes, but look at you, you did it all over again today after sawing up that woodpile. What was the water temperature? Or were you too scared to look?

      • It was still 13. I made a point of not looking until after I was in for fear I wouldn’t make it. Lying on the warm wooden ( beautifully oiled) deck afterwards was bliss.

  3. Well probably. But sisters can do anything remember…..and the black alkathene pipe sounds a goer to me. (Remember Robina just uses the warmed water from the hose to rinse herself off after her sea swims!). Are you laying down a challenge? I thought I’d finished for the season, but am off to the hot pools later with R – does that count??

    • It can absolutely count. My goodness Robina and you are great advertisements for the benefits of swimming. xx

    • I did think of that. You don’t think it would be cheating then?

  4. Did Antigene hypnotise you on her last visit!!? Next you’ll be saying things like ‘refreshing’ and ‘invigorating’…

    • ‘Refreshing! invigorating! Ever so good for the circulation!’. Oh and while I’m at it ‘Couldn’t you manage just a little morsel? You don’t want to get hungry in the night’. Yup, definitely been hypnotised by AntiGene. Well diagnosed. X
