I bet you’ve all been on the edge of your seats wondering what’s been happening with that plastering in living room<\/a> haven’t you? Well sit back and relax while I bring\u00a0you up to date.<\/p>\n

Here’s where we left things.<\/p>\n

\"Ready<\/a>

Ready for gib finishing and painting.<\/p><\/div>\n

Now don’t get too wildly excited, I’m\u00a0not completely finished yet. Forget all those 24 hour room renos on ‘The Block’<\/a>, this is real life. Which\u00a0means I also get to cook meals, go to work, and fix water pipes when Fencer Phil and his lads ram\u00a0fenceposts though\u00a0them with their fancy post driver<\/a>\u00a0(more about the fencing project soon).\u00a0Notwithstanding\u00a0I would like to (proudly) report that after ten\u00a0weeks\u00a0of being bossed around by my brain I have made a start.<\/p>\n

What is it with brains? Mine\u00a0was very\u00a0vocal in dissuading me from plastering. Whenever I thought about opening a\u00a0tub of Plus 4, this\u00a0loop track played — which I would try to interrupt every so often with some more\u00a0reasonable points.<\/p>\n

Brain<\/strong>: ‘Ooooh, that looks tricky’, ‘No, no, I don’t think you’ll be able to do that’, ‘You are going to make mess of it’.
\nMe<\/strong>: ‘Hold on, we have actually done plastering before you know. On a ceiling. Surely ceilings are\u00a0trickier than walls’.
\nBrain<\/strong>: ‘Ah yes, but ceilings have\u00a0matt paint which hides a multitude of sins, this is way\u00a0more exacting’. ‘No… [examines wall carefully] No, I definitely don’t think you’re\u00a0up to\u00a0it’, ‘You’re going to make\u00a0such a\u00a0mess’.<\/p>\n

And so it went, around and around, for all those weeks.<\/p>\n

Anyway, the other\u00a0morning I made a deal with my brain. I persuaded her that\u00a0we’d\u00a0work on just the\u00a0500mm of wall between the corner and the start of the ranch-slider. If it all went bad (Brain<\/strong>: ‘Damn right it will’) I would stop and ring a plasterer to finish the job. If it went well\u00a0I\u00a0would stop, have a cup of tea, and celebrate by ringing DIY Guy<\/a> with the good news.<\/p>\n

\"After<\/a>

After much persuasion my brain allows me to make a start.<\/p><\/div>\n

Well, I guess the outcome is obvious. After 20 mins of sanding it was all\u00a0going rather\u00a0swimmingly, and my brain had conceded\u00a0that maybe things might\u00a0work out after all. I had\u00a0a cup of tea. I rang DIY Guy, who spoke\u00a0suitably encouraging words, and I\u00a0tackled the rest of that wall; section by section, tea break by tea break. This is the current state of play. Better, yes?<\/p>\n

Now. With plastering and gib seal paint. You can see the ‘pine crime’ before pic here<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n

There’s still lots to do. Painting of course — this is just a\u00a0primer — but also I’m thinking of using some of the pine we removed from the walls to create a\u00a0taller skirting board. The one we have is way out of proportion for\u00a0the ceiling height. Also I’d like to put in some wider window architraves (so perhaps the skirting board I remove could come in handy\u00a0there?). But wait, there’s more… The reason I’ve left\u00a0that \u00a0right hand wall unfinished is that I’m going\u00a0to create some\u00a0floor to ceiling bookshelves<\/a>.\u00a0Even as I type the\u00a0Forbearing Husband is on his way home from the Big Smoke<\/a> with a car full of these<\/a>. What do you think? Anyone,\u00a0other than\u00a0me, always wanted a library ladder?<\/p>\n
