If it’s been a while since my last\u00a0home decor post<\/a> that will be because progress has been glacial.\u00a0I swear I am not holding out on you. All I’ve achieved, other than what I’m reporting on here,\u00a0is swapping\u00a0out a broken toilet roll holder. Yup,\u00a0it’s been that<\/em>\u00a0exciting on the interiors front, folks!<\/p>\n

Even this was an unplanned project. The homestead’s\u00a0pine tongue and\u00a0groove\u00a0ceilings provide much needed character in what is\u00a0otherwise a very ordinary 1980’s building. The existing fake-stained-glass shades are resplendent\u00a0with parallel lines, which, adjacent to all those\u00a0lines in the ceiling planks, were setting off a migraine.\u00a0I\u00a0knew they had to go, and sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

BEFORE. The bare bulb used to have a matching\u00a0shade. Early casualty of my irritation with\u00a0those lines.<\/p><\/div>\n

However I hadn’t actually got a plan for what to replace them with until I saw these\u00a0light fittings on special at Mitre 10.<\/p>\n

The picture on the box shows three, \u00a0but there is only one per box.<\/p><\/div>\n

I wasn’t sure whether they were\u00a0quite right for the room, so\u00a0on a impulse\u00a0I bought three, which was their entire stock. And a dimmer switch. I know, what can I say, such recklessness!\u00a0It took me a couple of weeks to get around to installing everything. Which you will be pleased to hear I did with no recklessness at all.<\/p>\n

I turned the power off at the mains, and read all the awkward translated-from-Mandarin instructions (‘avoid\u00a0placing genitals on\u00a0live electrical cables’ — yes, yes, I made that up. You know what I mean though). When our soon-to-be-resident electrician, Stephen<\/a>, visited last weekend he checked my work and deemed it up to snuff.<\/p>\n

And here is the result. Bear in mind that I couldn’t possibly show you a full room view because it is illegal\u00a0to put pictures of your house on your blog\u00a0unless it is\u00a0tidy (yup, I’m pretty sure that is a rule).<\/p>\n

AFTER. No migraine.<\/p><\/div>\n

You can just see three of the four lights in the living area, the fourth is out of sight around the corner\u00a0to the left. I was initially\u00a0resigned to finding a different (but complementary of course) fitting for that part of the room<\/a>. Then, lo and behold,\u00a0Mitre 10 restocked! I snatched up a\u00a0matching light\u00a0for the living room\u00a0and another for our bedroom (yes, I’ll show you later).<\/p>\n

So, that’s the update. What do you think? Is it an improvement? Or did you see a certain appeal in lots of\u00a0lines? Then again perhaps you agree with\u00a0the Forbearing Husband. He doesn’t give a jot\u00a0about contemporary pendant lighting design, but he has\u00a0enjoyed being able to dim the globes\u00a0while\u00a0we catch up with the second season\u00a0of Better Call Saul<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
