Down on the farm\u00a0gumboots are essential equipment<\/a>. At a pinch, in\u00a0summer, one might substitute crocs<\/a> in the area close to the house, but any time you are striding\u00a0across\u00a0paddocks the added protection of gummies is most desirable.<\/p>\n

All sorts of sizes and colours. Mud splatter denotes recent use.<\/p><\/div>\n

In winter there is mud and wet grass to contend with. During\u00a0summer those of you who insist on skimpier footwear will get biddy-bids and\u00a0seeds get caught between your toes and stuck in your socks. Our paddocks are resplendent with\u00a0good manure all year round, and the girls<\/a>\u00a0who create that manure\u00a0are heavy if they happen to stand on your\u00a0foot. No surprises that once you live on a\u00a0farm you develop that unmistakable marker of\u00a0rural living: the gumboot tan line.<\/p>\n

We like to ensure no guest suffers\u00a0misfortune, so we\u00a0keep\u00a0a variety\u00a0of gumboot styles and sizes handy to\u00a0the back door. The abundance is partly due to a\u00a0goodly range of boots that travelled with us from West Auckland (once renowned for it’s wonderful clay resource<\/a>, and now for the mud that same clay creates), partly to boots left by our\u00a0townie visitors. I’m always thrilled when people say ‘I think I might just leave these\u00a0here for next time I come up’. It’s a promise to return.<\/p>\n

Awesomely, if you pop\u00a0into Whangarei for a bit of shopping you can continue to wear your gumboots. Today I walked around Mitre 10 in stretched out fleece\u00a0pants, a far-too-big brushed cotton shirt smelling strongly of horse, and my blue gummies. There was\u00a0no fear of looking out of place. A\u00a0chap in the next aisle over was sporting white gumboots and stubbies<\/a>. Just try that<\/em> at\u00a0Sylvia Park Shopping Centre<\/a>,\u00a0people.<\/p>\n

Oh, and for really\u00a0formal occasions, such as visiting Auckland, us rural folk have cowboy boots.\u00a0Bloody oath!<\/p>\n
