I admit it. I&#8217;ve been holding out on you. Once upon a time I used to be a librarian, and one of the things on my list of essentials for a place to buy land was easy access to a decent size\u00a0library system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1581\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-114.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1581\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1581\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1581\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-114-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"vhvhv\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-114.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-114-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-114-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Libraries: Borrow the books, keep the ideas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although nowhere near as\u00a0large as those in Auckland or Wellington, this is positively vast compared to\u00a0many of Northland&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nz.pinterest.com\/pin\/63331938483067959\/\" target=\"_blank\">rural libraries<\/a>. As a bonus\u00a0I find it\u00a0architecturally rather lovely with its glass frontage and the keyhole staircases at each end of the building.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1583\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-116.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1583\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1583\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1583\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-116-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"pretty\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-116.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-116-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-116-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whangarei Central Library\u00a0(2005,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasmax.com\/work\/whangarei-library\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jasmax<\/a>).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They\u00a0remind me of the stairs up to the second level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.nz\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/media4.architecturemedia.net\/site_media\/media\/cache\/ae\/11\/ae118085e797e1ebc346716f01b78dd2.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/architecturenow.co.nz\/articles\/glazed-expression\/&amp;h=425&amp;w=638&amp;tbnid=URFSt1UBdu8hSM:&amp;docid=qkAtG6R73-v9yM&amp;ei=l1H_VtCjHIO_0gSi6J7IBQ&amp;tbm=isch&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiQy_XVle_LAhWDn5QKHSK0B1kQMwguKBMwEw\" target=\"_blank\">Wellington Central Library<\/a> (1991, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.listener.co.nz\/culture\/interview-architect-ian-athfield\/\" target=\"_blank\">Athfield<\/a>). Both buildings are so much more appealing\u00a0than the <a href=\"https:\/\/c758759.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/cropper\/158658.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">central library in\u00a0Auckland<\/a>. I can&#8217;t find reference\u00a0to the\u00a0architect,\u00a0but\u00a0given Auckland&#8217;s\u00a0rather\u00a0unimaginative 1970&#8217;s aesthetic\u00a0I&#8217;m picking it\u00a0as a\u00a0design by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/c\/c5\/Bob_the_builder.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Bob from\u00a0the works department<\/a>*.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1584\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-117.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1584\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1584\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-117-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"mysteries\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-117.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-117-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.charmedlife.co.nz\/cowboybootsandbrokenfingers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Library-2016-02-02-117-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wet autumn\u00a0weekends with\u00a0an Agatha Christie and endless cups of tea. So comforting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, enough criticism. Auckland Libraries have far and away the best public library book collection in the country. When I&#8217;m there I&#8217;m fizzing with the excitement of all those ideas in one place rather than looking for architectural elegance. It&#8217;s been more years than I care to remember since library school, but I still find libraries the most delightful of places.<\/p>\n<p>* Any similarities between\u00a0Bob\u00a0and persons\u00a0actually employed in the works department\u00a0at Auckland City Council during the 1970s are purely coincidental.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK.
